CrossFit combines high-intensity training with strength training, creating a unique physiological strain: it rapidly depletes your body's stored energy while simultaneously tearing down muscle fibers.
Refueling with both carbohydrates and protein targets both sides of that repair process at once, aiding in recovery AND reducing DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).
Carbohydrates Replenish Stored Energy (Glycogen)
High-intensity workouts rely heavily on muscle glycogen for fast power. Eating fast-digesting carbs after a WOD rapidly restores these stores, preventing central nervous system fatigue and preparing your body for your next training session.
Protein Repairs & Builds Muscle (MPS)
Lifting heavy loads creates microscopic tears in muscle tissue. Consuming protein provides essential amino acids (particularly leucine) to trigger Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS), repairing those micro-tears so muscles rebuild stronger.
The Insulin Synergistic Effect
This is where the magic happens: consuming carbs spikes insulin, a primary storage and anabolic hormone. Insulin acts like a key, driving amino acids and glucose into muscle cells much faster than protein alone can achieve.
It's incredibly important to get both carbohydrates and protein into your system as quickly as possible post-WOD. Aim for refueling within 60 minutes, with a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio of carbs:protein. Your body, muscle, and energy levels will thank you in the morning!
